Pomsky Generations

What Do F1, F2, F1B, and F1X Mean in Pomsky Generations?

If you’ve spent any time researching Pomskies, you’ve likely run into terms like F1, F2, or F1B. But what do they actually mean? And do they impact size, temperament, or appearance? Let’s break it down so you can understand the generations behind the Pomsky magic!

F1 – The First Generation
This is where it all starts. An F1 Pomsky has one Siberian Husky parent (the mother) and one Pomeranian parent (the father). Because of the size difference, artificial insemination is always used.

Quick Snapshot:
50% Husky, 50% Pomeranian
Often shows the most unpredictable variation in size and appearance

F2 – The Second Generation
F2 Pomskies are the puppies of two F1 parents. That means all four grandparents are purebred—two Siberian Huskies and two Pomeranians.

Quick Snapshot:
Still 50/50 in terms of breed genetics
Breeders start to see more consistency in traits

F3 – The Third Generation
An F3 Pomsky typically comes from F2 parents. Sometimes, one parent might be F2 and the other F4 or F5, but the resulting pup is still considered F3.

Quick Snapshot:
Still a mix, but from multiple generations of Pomskies
Offers more predictability in terms of temperament and structure

F1B – First Generation Backcross
An F1B is a backcross between an F1 Pomsky and a purebred Siberian Husky or a purebred Pomeranian. This "leans" the puppy’s genetics more heavily in one direction.

Important Note: For safety, the larger breed (typically the Husky) should always be the mother.

Quick Snapshot:
75% one breed, 25% the other
Great for those looking for a dog that favors either Husky or Pom traits

F1X – The Designer Cross
This is where things get creative! An F1X Pomsky has one Pomsky parent and one parent that’s part American Eskimo or German Spitz. We prefer American Eskimos for their temperament and structure.

Quick Snapshot:
Still part Pomsky, but with a little extra personality and coat variation
Carefully bred for structure, size, or specific traits

But What About Size?
Here’s the truth: generation alone does NOT determine size. The best indicators of a puppy’s adult size are:

* The size of the parents
* The puppy’s current growth rate
* Trends from previous litters

We do our best to estimate adult weight, but Pomskies—like people—don’t always follow the rules! From dainty lap dogs to sturdy adventurers, there’s a wide range of possibilities, and we love every one of them.
